The debate over the future of German border controls is intensifying just before the launch of the Common European Asylum System (GEAS). According to Deutschlandfunk, the SPD is aiming for a gradual reduction of controls at the borders with direct neighboring countries.
The Union rejects this initiative and considers the timing premature. The positions of the two major coalition parties are thus clearly diverging, while the implementation of the EU asylum reform is imminent.
