Police in Northern Ireland have arrested a man and declared a critical incident after a 40-year-old was stabbed in Belfast on Monday evening. The attack occurred around 10:30pm outside an apartment complex in the north of the city. The suspect, a Somali man in his thirties, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, the Guardian reports.

Keir Starmer described the attack as ‘sickening’. ‘I have absolutely zero tolerance for appalling scenes of violence like this on our streets,’ he said. ‘My thoughts are first and foremost with the victim, and I thank the first responders, including members of the public who intervened.’

A video circulating on social media shows the attacker kneeling on the victim and striking his head and neck. Bystanders tried to stop the attack – one hit the assailant with a hurling stick. Police praised the courage of the helpers. The injured man was taken to hospital; his condition is serious.
