A former Bundesliga professional is making a deliberate career move from the regional leagues to the fourth division. Matthias Ostrzolek is hanging up his boots and will take over as head coach of Bayernliga side Wacker Burghausen starting in the summer of 2024.

The 35-year-old full-back most recently served as a player-manager for Schwaben Augsburg in the Bayern Regionalliga. After this season, he will retire from playing entirely to focus on his new role as the club’s primary tactician.

Ostrzolek brings Bundesliga experience from stints at Hannover 96, Hamburger SV, and FC Augsburg. Now, he begins his managerial career in professional football with an ambitious fourth-division outfit. “From the very beginning, I was given a clear picture of where the club wants to go sportingly, and that’s exactly why I’m very excited about this task,” Ostrzolek told BILD.

The club expressed satisfaction with the appointment. “With this signing, we gain a young and ambitious coach who shares our sporting vision,” Wacker Burghausen stated. The move represents a typical career path for former pros who start their coaching journeys in the lower leagues.

For fans of German football, this step illustrates how ex-players remain engaged in the sport after their active careers. Ostrzolek follows many colleagues who are now passing on their experience to young talents and ambitious fourth-division clubs. The Bayernliga gains a recognizable name, while the coach himself gets the opportunity to prove himself in a leadership role.

Pre-season preparations at Wacker Burghausen will begin this summer under the new head coach. Ostrzolek will then have to demonstrate whether he can successfully translate his playing experience into managerial competence. For the club, the appointment brings public attention and sporting expertise from someone who has competed at the highest levels himself.

From the beginning, I was given a clear picture of where the club wants to go in sporting terms, and that's exactly why I'm very much looking forward to this task.
