Iran threatens war ‘beyond the region’ if US attacks

Iran's Revolutionary Guards have threatened a war that would extend far beyond the Middle East if the United States resumes attacks on Tehran. The warning came after US Donald Trump again threatened military strikes unless Iran accepts a deal to end the conflict.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) warned that any renewed US aggression would trigger a war “beyond the region,” according to a statement carried by the semi-official Tasnim news agency and reported by the Guardian. “Should aggression against Iran be repeated, the promised regional war will this time go beyond the region, and our devastating strikes in places you can hardly imagine will turn you to ashes,” the IRGC said, directly threatening the United States.

US Donald Trump had earlier said Washington could strike Iran again if no agreement on a permanent settlement is reached in the coming days. At the same time, Trump insisted that Tehran still wants a deal. The contradictory signals from Washington and Tehran are heightening already severe tensions in the region.

Jordan shoots down drone – Pakistan mediates

Jordan’s military said on Wednesday it shot down a drone of unknown origin that had entered Jordanian airspace. The drone crashed in Jerash Governorate, about 50 kilometers north of Amman. No casualties were reported, the army said. The drone’s origin remained unclear.

Meanwhile, Pakistan continues its mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi traveled to Tehran again to speak with Iranian officials. It is his second trip to the Iranian capital within a week. Islamabad is trying to find a diplomatic solution to the growing conflict.

The Guards’ threat comes at a time when US-Iran tensions have been escalating for months. Trump had already threatened massive airstrikes on Iranian facilities in early May if Tehran was not ready to reach a deal. Iran, for its part, has expanded its military strike capability and repeatedly stressed it is prepared for a comprehensive defense.
