SPD foreign policy expert Rolf Mützenich has pushed back against the assumption that Russia can be defeated militarily in the Ukraine war. Speaking on Deutschlandfunk, Mützenich said: “Russia cannot simply be defeated on the battlefield.” He pointed to recent Russian airstrikes, which he said underscored the need for an alternative to a purely military strategy.
Mützenich again called for a European initiative to end the war diplomatically. He did not provide details on a possible initiative. His remarks add to the debate within the SPD over the course of the Ukraine war, which also includes the question of direct communication with Russia.
