The documentary ‘Silenced’ about violence against women opened the Sydney Film Festival on Wednesday. In the film, former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins gives an emotional interview. She says she deliberately decided against changing her name after her 2024 wedding because she is proud to be Brittany Higgins.

“When I got married, I had the option to change my name, but I didn’t because I am really proud to be Brittany Higgins,” she said in the film. “Hopefully that’s just a footnote in my story and no longer the headline.” On Wednesday evening, Higgins walked the red carpet alongside Australian lawyer Jennifer Robinson. Robinson represented Amber Heard in a defamation case against her ex-husband Johnny Depp. Heard also appears in the film, which is based on Robinson’s book ‘How Many More Women?’

Since 2021, when Higgins told the media that she had been raped by a colleague on a minister’s sofa in Parliament House two years earlier, the name ‘Brittany Higgins’ has rarely been out of the headlines.
