Israel strikes Iran despite Trump’s plea for restraint

Israel launched airstrikes on central and western Iran on Monday, openly defying US Donald Trump, who had urged restraint. According to the Guardian, the escalation threatens to plunge the Middle East back into a regional war.

Israel’s strikes on central and western Iran on Monday mark the first direct military confrontation between the two arch-enemies since a ceasefire in April paused the US-Israeli war with Iran. Iran’s attack, to which Israel responded, was itself retaliation for Israeli strikes on Beirut.

Hours earlier, US Donald Trump had called Benjamin Netanyahu and urged him not to retaliate immediately for Iran’s missile attack on Sunday evening. Trump told the Guardian: ‘I call the shots. He [Netanyahu] doesn’t call the shots.’ The Israeli strikes ignored that demand.

Iranian state media reported explosions in Tehran, Isfahan, Karaj, and Tabriz. The Revolutionary Guards said Israel had used air-launched ballistic missiles. Airspace around Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport was closed. The White House left inquiries about the strikes and possible coordination with the US unanswered.

The situation threatens to escalate further: In Saudi Arabia, rocket warning sirens sounded near the Prince Sultan Air Base, where US troops are stationed. The Israeli military also reported shooting down a missile from Yemen – the Houthi rebels, who support Iran, had already entered the war in March.
