The black-red state government in Hessen does not want to change the rules for the transition from primary school to gymnasium. The principle of merit will continue to play no role in the allocation of school places, as the FAZ reports. Coalition representatives made this clear on Thursday during a plenary debate in the state parliament.
The FDP subsequently announced its own draft law aimed at giving greater weight to the merit principle. Parliamentary group leader Stefan Naas said the debate would continue. Education policy spokesman Moritz Promny emphasized: “Chance should not determine life opportunities.” The efforts of children must not be ignored.
The background to the discussion is complaints from numerous parents in the Rhine-Main region. If the number of applications exceeds capacity, lots are drawn – regardless of grades or primary school recommendations. In Frankfurt, between 450 and 600 students were assigned to an unwanted school each year in recent years.
