The head of the Catholic Church spoke to journalists in Castel Gandolfo near Rome. Demanding blanket deportations of migrants is not a Christian response, the Pope said. He compared the stance to wanting to simply get rid of a problem.
In Italy, the newly founded party Futuro Nazionale of former Roberto Vannacci had made remigration a central issue. The term is also being promoted by far-right forces in other European countries.
In parallel, the G7 states announced new sanctions against Russia at their summit in Évian. The group of seven major industrial nations wants to increase pressure on Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. The heads of state and government agreed to tighten punitive measures, including in the oil and gas sector. In addition, Ukraine is to receive more long-range weapons and air defense systems, as was announced in Évian. Aid for the coming winter was also pledged.
