Milan’s public prosecutor’s office on Tuesday placed at least one employee of the municipal transport company ATM under investigation. He is accused of accessing the IT system without authorization and hacking surveillance cameras to obtain images of passengers. Investigators also ordered searches of five other male employees and seized their phones and other devices.
The drivers allegedly shared photos from the surveillance cameras in the chat group, focusing on passengers’ legs, faces, breasts, and thighs. The images were accompanied by sexist comments and jokes about the women’s bodies. The group was discovered when a passenger on line 15 noticed a uniformed but off-duty driver looking at the offensive chat on his phone on Saturday.
The woman photographed the screen and sent the image to a well-known feminist activist, who informed ATM. The company immediately launched an internal investigation. In a statement, ATM said: “ATM acted promptly and with the utmost attention to fully clarify the incident, verify the proper use of company devices, protect passengers, and defend the thousands of employees who work correctly every day in the service of the city.”
