The election commission declared the PP the clear winner after the June 1 vote. The seat distribution gives the party a majority of around 90 percent. Voter turnout was 94 percent, with about 40 million people casting ballots.

However, voting only took place in 501 constituencies. The conflict region of Tigray was excluded from the election for the second time, having already been barred in 2021. In the Amhara and Oromia regions, voting was interrupted in several locations after armed groups threatened roadblocks.

Abiy Ahmed has been in office since 2018 and was initially seen as a beacon of hope. In 2019, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for resolving the border conflict with Eritrea. Later, he became increasingly authoritarian. The two-year civil war in Tigray claimed around 600,000 lives. Human rights organizations accused his government of serious abuses.
