The national temperature indicator, an average of day and night temperatures at dozens of locations, rose to 30 degrees Celsius, Météo-France reported. On Tuesday, the value had stood at 29.8 degrees. More than half of the country is under a red heat warning, and tens of thousands of households in the west are without power.
Temperatures above 40 degrees were recorded in Paris and many other regions on Wednesday. The heatwave is affecting large parts of Western Europe and has already led to deaths and disruptions, particularly in France, Spain, and Italy. In Pissos, in the southwestern Landes department, 44.3 degrees were measured on Tuesday.
The heatwave is expected to spread eastward in the coming days, with severe heat warnings for Poland, Croatia, and Hungary. In Germany, temperatures of up to 40 degrees are expected over the weekend. In France, a gradual cooling with thunderstorms and possible flooding is forecast from Friday.
