According to information from the Federal Police made public by the state of Hesse, deportations from Germany to Afghanistan are no longer limited to criminals or those deemed a threat. Hesse’s Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) said the federal government had created the conditions “so that regular deportations of individuals required to leave the country to Afghanistan will be possible in future.” Hesse’s focus will remain on deporting criminals and threats. “But Hesse will also make use of the additional options,” Poseck added.
On Thursday, Brandenburg and Saxony also announced they would use the new possibilities. However, both states said their focus would remain on criminals.
Amnesty International sharply criticized the new regulation. “Deportations to Afghanistan contradict Germany’s human rights and international law obligations,” said asylum expert Nina Alizadeh Marandi. German policy is making itself vulnerable to blackmail, she added. According to Amnesty, 198 people have been deported to Afghanistan since 2024.
