Russian troops carried out more than 80 attacks on 22 settlements in the Sumy region overnight into Monday. A 39-year-old man died and several people were injured.

More than 80 attacks on 22 settlements in the Sumy region were carried out by the Russian army within a single day – from Sunday morning to Monday morning. This is reported by the news agency Ukrinform, citing the regional military administration. A 39-year-old man was killed and several people were injured.

According to the military administration, the 39-year-old died in the Krasnopillia community when a Russian drone struck a civilian car. In the Yampil community, two men aged 44 and 59 were injured when a drone hit an ambulance. In the Kyrykivka community, a 59-year-old was injured when a tractor drove over an explosive device and it detonated. In the Hlukhiv community, a 58-year-old sustained injuries from a drone strike.

In addition, according to the authorities, a 17-year-old, two men aged 55 and 46, and a 64-year-old woman sought medical help. They had already been injured on 10 October in the Seredyna-Buda community – the teenager by a drone strike, the other three by Russian shelling. The authorities recorded most of the attacks in the Sumy and Shostka raions. According to their information, artillery, mortars, multiple rocket launchers, FPV drones, unmanned aerial vehicles and guided aerial bombs were used.

Ukrinform had previously reported that Russian forces in the Sumy region had directed a drone at an ambulance; a 44-year-old driver and a 59-year-old emergency paramedic were injured.

Why the Sumy Region Is Repeatedly Targeted

The region in north-eastern Ukraine borders directly on Russia’s Kursk Oblast and has been regularly under fire since the start of Russia’s war of aggression. In recent weeks, the military administration had repeatedly reported nightly attacks with drones, artillery and glide bombs. The figures now reported refer to the period from Sunday morning to Monday morning and are an interim status – the authorities usually update their information over the course of the day.

For the people in the region, this means: everyday life continues to take place in cellars and shelters, and ambulances and rescue workers themselves come under fire. The two injured from the ambulance that was hit are the most recent example of this.

What Remains Unclear So Far

Whether the more than 80 attacks were a coordinated wave of attacks or ongoing shelling along the border is not clear from the military administration’s statement. The information from the region cannot currently be independently verified. The Ukrainian Air Force usually publishes its own daily tallies of drones and missiles fired; whether the figures match those of the regional administration is open.

What is clear: the Sumy region remains one of the most contested and most heavily shelled areas of Ukraine. For local residents, this means that for now nothing changes about the daily danger – and for rescue workers, nothing changes about the rule that they deploy to operations in which they themselves can become targets.
