The German Animal Welfare Association has filed a lawsuit against the federal government, according to information obtained by Spiegel. The reason is what the association sees as insufficient financial support for animal shelters, which are reaching their limits in many places.
The organization accuses the government of failing to meet its responsibility for animal welfare. The shelters are suffering from rising costs and a growing number of surrendered animals, it said.
The Animal Welfare Association is demanding a significant increase in state funding to secure the long-term operation of the facilities. The lawsuit is now intended to clarify in court whether the current funding is sufficient.
