Berlin is set to host a rare exploration of one of the 20th century's most influential fashion pioneers. From May 15 to October 11, 2026, the Museum of Decorative Arts (Kunstgewerbemuseum) will present the first comprehensive Madame Grès exhibition in the German-speaking world.

The show, titled "Many Shades of Grès: Fashion Becomes Art," spotlights the French couturière (1903–1993), whose creations blurred the lines between fashion and fine art. At its heart are 25 original garments from the museum's collection—one of the largest Grès holdings outside Paris.

"This exhibition fills a significant gap in Germany's museum landscape," a museum spokesperson noted, highlighting that no comparable presentation of her work has been staged in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland until now.

The displays showcase Grès' signature draping techniques, which transformed fabrics into sculptural artworks. Her designs revolutionized haute couture and inspired generations of designers.

In collaboration with the HTW Berlin School of Culture and Design, the exhibition broadens its perspective. Students have drawn inspiration from Grès' legacy, presenting their own interpretations in a dynamic dialogue between historical heritage and contemporary creativity.

Visitors can expect a multifaceted journey: beyond the iconic dresses, accompanying programs delve into the craftsmanship, artistic legacy, and ongoing relevance of Grès' work. The exhibition provocatively asks where fashion ends and art begins.

For fashion enthusiasts and art lovers alike, this offers a unique opportunity—not only to admire historical masterpieces but also to see how emerging designers engage with this heritage today. The show bridges museum presentation with live creative processes.

The Museum of Decorative Arts continues its tradition of showcasing applied arts in diverse forms. Following this successful foray into fashion design history, the institution plans further collaborations with Berlin universities.

Tickets and details are available via the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin website. The exhibition promises not just aesthetic delight but fresh perspectives on the interplay of craft, design, and art.
