The planned reform stipulates that families will no longer have to apply for the benefit themselves. Instead, the payout is to occur automatically as soon as the authorities register the birth of a child. This is reported by the Abendzeitung München, citing coalition circles.

The aim of the new regulation is to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and relieve families. Until now, parents have had to apply for child benefit at the family benefits office of the Federal Employment Agency – a step that is often forgotten or involves effort. The reform is to take effect from 2027.

Details on implementation, such as how data transfer between registry offices and the family benefits office is to function, are not yet known. The federal government plans to flesh out the proposals over the course of the year.
