Democratic Party released a 192-page analysis of its 2024 election defeat on Thursday. According to the Guardian, the report focuses on voter groups Kamala Harris lost — Latinos, men, and rural voters. The Gaza war and Joe Biden’s age are not mentioned.
Ken Martin, chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), apologized to party members for initially wanting to withhold the analysis. “The report does not meet my standards, and it will not meet yours either,” Martin said, as reported by the Guardian.
Progressive voices criticize omissions
New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called it “pretty incredible that Gaza is not even mentioned in the autopsy report.” She said Gaza was “very clearly a major dynamic and a major strand in 2024.” California Representative Ro Khanna stated: “One of the reasons we lost is our blank check for Israel and Netanyahu while they committed genocide in Gaza.”
The report itself warns the party against focusing too much on “abstract issues and identity politics.” It says: “Harris gave up on rural America, assuming that urban and suburban margins would compensate. That math doesn’t add up.”
Background and political fallout
The release came after the decision to withhold the report caused internal outrage. Separately, House Republicans postponed a vote on a war powers resolution to end the US war with Iran, originally scheduled for Thursday. The three top House Democrats — Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark, and Pete Aguilar — called the cancellation “cowardly.”
