Margus Tsahkna, Estonia’s foreign minister since 2023, sees Russia in a weaker position for the first time. “Russia is gaining nothing on the battlefield; they are losing a lot of people,” he told Zeit. He said Russia suffers around 35,000 dead and wounded each month. Recruitment is no longer running as before, the economy is suffering, and domestic political tensions are growing.

Ukraine’s far-reaching precision strikes are hitting Russia hard, Tsahkna said. The Russian population no longer feels safe. Against this backdrop, Putin is trying to involve Europe in negotiations – a maneuver Tsahkna calls a dangerous trap. Europe must increase pressure on Russia to enable real talks.

Tsahkna stressed Ukraine’s importance for European security and argued for a clear EU stance. The discussion about a possible deployment of nuclear weapons in Estonia shows the tense situation in the region.
