The heads of state and government of the seven leading democratic economic powers (G7) are continuing their meeting in Évian, France. The focus is on reviving stalled negotiations to end Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to take part in the deliberations, according to Tagesschau.
US Donald Trump said on Monday evening during a meeting with host Emmanuel Macron that he had held very good talks with Zelenskyy and Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin on Sunday. “I think we can achieve something there. Really,” Trump said. He believes both sides are open to it. After the agreement on Iran, the focus should now be on Ukraine.
Zelenskyy outlined what such an initiative could look like on his way to the summit in the Moldovan capital Chisinau. Originally, Putin was to be invited to Lake Geneva – but Moscow rejected this. He then discussed with Trump organizing a meeting in the United States. If Trump makes such a proposal to Putin, it will be harder for him to turn it down, Zelenskyy said in a video. “We’ll see what comes of it.”
