Already the previous year, the number of firearm offenses in Hesse had reached a ten-year high. Now it has increased again: the police crime statistics (PKS) recorded 878 cases last year in which a firearm was threatened or used, the Hessian State Criminal Police Office announced. The year before, there were 669 cases.
Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) expressed concern. “It is more than understandable that these acts, even if they may not be connected, affect people’s sense of security,” he said. The police will continue to do everything to improve the security situation and the subjective feeling of safety.
The statistics include not only live firearms but also blank guns, irritant weapons, and soft air guns. Recently, shootings in Raunheim and Gießen caused a stir. In Gießen alone, police have counted four incidents with gunfire since October, some of which left people injured.
