Jane Fonda: Warner takeover by Paramount is attack on media freedom

Acting legend Jane Fonda has called the planned takeover of Warner Bros. by Paramount Skydance a direct attack on free speech and media freedom. At a counter-event to Donald Trump's birthday, she urged people to sign a petition against the merger.

According to Spiegel, the 88-year-old Oscar winner addressed concertgoers in New York on Friday. She asked them to urge their state attorneys general to block the merger of Paramount and Warner Brothers. The deal also includes the news channel CNN.

Fonda, who was married for years to the late CNN founder Ted Turner, said she has a personal interest in CNN and wants to preserve its freedom of speech and independence. The takeover is “a direct attack on free speech and freedom of opinion,” she said. Trump critics fear that CNN could lose its editorial independence under Paramount’s umbrella.

The event was organized by the Committee for the First Amendment, which refers to the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. It guarantees freedom of speech, press, and assembly – fundamental rights that critics see threatened by Trump’s autocratic tendencies. The U.S. Department of Justice approved the megadeal on Friday.
