Jim Chalmers, the Australian Treasurer, highlighted in a speech ahead of the 2026 budget presentation that many Australians are suffering from economic fears that drive them towards populist parties like One Nation. According to The Guardian, One Nation's victory in the Farrer by-election, the first for the party in the House of Representatives in its 30-year history, has alarmed the government.

Chalmers stated, "I think the housing market and the tax system are not working for many Australians, and tonight we want to address that." This statement underscores the urgency with which the government aims to tackle the challenges in the housing market, which have intensified under the Labor government.

Additionally, Chalmers acknowledged that many people are excluded from the housing market and that the situation is not improving. This could compel the government to reconsider reforms in negative gearing and taxation to meet citizens' needs.

The upcoming measures could also be interpreted as a response to the growing populist wave in countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe. Chalmers and Anthony Albanese are aware of the risks associated with voter dissatisfaction.
