The installation stretches across the entire bridge: 120 meters long, 20 meters wide, and up to 18 meters high. Stalactites and the sound of dripping water are meant to make passersby forget the French capital for a moment. The soundtrack was provided by Thomas Bangalter, former member of the electronic duo Daft Punk.
The cave is open around the clock and lies on a heavily frequented pedestrian axis between the Samaritaine department store and the mint, not far from Notre-Dame. Originally, the “Caverne” was supposed to open on June 6, but storm and rain damaged the inflatable shell and caused several tears, making the postponement necessary.
As early as 1985, Christo and Jeanne-Claude had wrapped the Pont Neuf in fabric – an art project that attracted millions. JR’s work picks up on this tradition but sets its own accents: instead of wrapping, the artist creates a completely new space on the historic structure.
