If money is tight in Munich, the Münchner Tafel can supply food – but not overnight. You register online, then you wait. The charity sets out what to prepare on its “Hilfe finden” (find help) page.
Who can sign up?
You must live in Munich and have a low income: after rent and utilities, “not much more than 563 euros” a month should be left. Families face different limits, which the Tafel does not specify. There is expressly no legal entitlement to the food.
The documents depend on your situation:
- Bürgergeld: page one of the notice plus the calculation sheet listing every household member.
- Basic income support (Grundsicherung) or asylum-seeker benefits: the complete notice, all pages.
- No benefits: current tenancy agreement, bank statements for the last three months for each household member, payslips for the last three months, notices such as child benefit, housing benefit or pension, and the names and birth dates of everyone in the household.
How does registration work, and how long is the wait?
The Tafel prefers the online portal. By phone, call Monday or Wednesday between 14:00 and 16:00; in person, go on Monday between 16:00 and 17:00 to Schäftlarnstraße 10 (Kontorhaus 1, room 216) with all documents. You get an email confirming receipt. The Tafel says the wait can last several weeks and asks applicants not to chase. When a place opens, an email gives the date, time and directions, ideally to a distribution point near your home. In urgent need, call 089 / 244 136-380 on weekdays.
The Münchner Tafel says it serves more than 22,000 people a week at 30 distribution points, with about 1,000 volunteers. The national body Tafel Deutschland says users generally pay a “symbolic contribution” at distribution; the Munich page gives no figure.
Demand is high nationwide. ZDFheute reported in December 2024 that a third of Tafeln had admission freezes or waiting lists and that customer numbers had risen 50 per cent on average since the war began. “Tafeln cannot absorb what the state has failed to do for decades,” the umbrella body’s chairman, Andreas Steppuhn, told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung. We found no newer Munich figures.
Our assessment: if your budget is tight, register early and gather every document first – missing papers are the most avoidable hold-up. While you wait, social advice services and neighbourhood help can bridge the gap. The waiting time is the Tafel’s own experience, not a guarantee either way.
