The museum in the former emergency reception camp in Gießen (NAL) has established itself as a place of learning and remembrance after one year. As the FAZ reports, the museum is also presenting itself at Gamescom in Cologne and the Hessentag in Fulda. Among the exhibits is a car of the East German brand Trabant.

The exhibition spans 500 square meters and shows more than a thousand photos as well as films on 55 screens. Visitors can follow, among other things, the escape story of former Norbert Nachtweih, who fled East Germany in 1976. In its first year, the museum counted around 20,000 visitors – more than the targeted 15,000.

The NAL opened on June 17, the former Day of German Unity. Former Federal President Joachim Gauck praised the museum as a place of remembrance “of flight, expulsion, new beginnings – as German history, but also as human history.”
