A man allegedly threatened Poland’s prime minister and planned an attack. What investigators say, where accounts differ and what is still unknown.

Police in Poland have detained a man who allegedly threatened Prime Minister Donald Tusk and planned an attack on him. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński announced the arrest on Sunday evening; Tusk thanked police on X for their “quick and decisive action”. Status: 11 October, around 7 pm Berlin time.

The alert came in overnight into Sunday. According to Rzeczpospolita, a threatening email reached the general address of the State Protection Service (SOP) in the morning, targeting Tusk and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. Government spokesman Adam Szłapka said both men were informed at about 7 am. At 11 am police, the SOP and the domestic intelligence agency ABW met at the Anti-Terrorist Centre. A spokesman for the minister coordinating the special services put the probability that the threats would be carried out as “high”.

Rzeczpospolita reports the arrest took place in Wrocław before 5 pm. The man has not been named; he was reportedly known to police for minor thefts and unpaid maintenance. No charges have been reported.

What remains unclear

Accounts differ in detail. Kierwiński mentions only an attack on Tusk, while the original alert also named Kosiniak-Kamysz. Polsat News, citing TVN24, says the plan involved firearms and a radical group looking for volunteers; the tipster had talked with a man called Krzysztof about weapons, hatred of the government and a “planned mass killing”. No source confirms that he is the man now in custody. According to Rzeczpospolita, the email’s author was not the would-be attacker but knew of the plans. It quotes sources saying the case is unrelated to the recent attacks on schools in Mazovia, which ZDF mentions: “separate matters”.

None of the sources points to a foreign backer. That matters because Polish authorities have repeatedly reported Russian sabotage and assassination plots: in 2024 a Pole was arrested on suspicion of preparing an attempt on Volodymyr Zelensky, and in August 2026 Warsaw announced the arrest of a Russian citizen over an alleged plot against a Ukrainian rapper. Tusk himself warned in September of more hybrid attacks by Russia on NATO’s eastern flank.

Our assessment: until investigators release details, the evidence leans towards a domestic motive or a lone-actor case rather than a state-run network, though that is far from certain. The next days will decide it: a custody order, the charges, and whether the “radical organisation” exists at all. For Germany and Ukraine the stakes are practical, since Poland is the main hub for aid and supplies going to Kyiv.
