Russian forces launched a massive drone attack on western and central Ukraine on Monday, May 20. According to the BBC, citing the Ukrainian Air Force (Povitriani Syly), groups of Shahed drones entered Ukrainian airspace from midday. After 4 p.m. local time, parts of the swarms headed toward the cities of Chernivtsi, Zhytomyr, and Khmelnytskyi.
The attacks targeted several regions: drones were spotted over the south of Oblast heading toward Khmelnytskyi, over the south of Oblast heading toward the Ozerne military airfield and the city of Zhytomyr. Drones also flew over the south of Oblast toward Zhytomyr. Later, drones entered Oblast and threatened the city of Kolomyia, according to the head of the oblast, Svitlana Onyshchuk. The Air Force confirmed the attack on Kolomyia. The head of Bukovyna, Ruslan Osypenko, also reported drone attacks on his region.
The Ukrainian Air Force warned that such daytime attacks often serve to reconnoiter air defenses and precede larger nighttime mass attacks. The previous night, Russia had already attacked several cities in southern and eastern Ukraine. There were fatalities in Dnipro and Konotop, and damage in Odesa.
