Slovakia’s constitutional court ruled on Wednesday that the country’s public debt had exceeded the limit set in the constitution. It therefore ordered Robert Fico’s government to immediately call a confidence vote in parliament. The vote is scheduled for later today.
The governing coalition holds 78 of 150 seats in the Slovak parliament. Observers expect the government to survive the vote. Fico said he respects the ruling. His government had originally planned to hold the confidence vote later this year, tying it to the vote on next year’s budget.
