The Spanish government has sharply criticized the reaction of some EU countries to the migration crisis in Ceuta. Pedro Sánchez accused other European governments of attacking Spain ‘out of prejudice, fake news, ignorance or political interest’. The EU cannot afford ‘this selfish, polarizing and unlawful reaction’, Sánchez said in a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Italy’s Giorgia Meloni called the scenes in Ceuta ‘shocking’ and suspended the Schengen Agreement with Spain for one month. Finland and Denmark supported this step, while Andrej Babiš called for a temporary suspension of Spain’s Schengen membership. Spain responded by summoning the Italian ambassador in Madrid.
EU interior ministers are to discuss the situation via video conference on Tuesday. 22 of the 27 EU states called for emergency talks in an open letter. Spain stresses that it has fully restored control over the border in less than 48 hours. Fernando Grande-Marlaska said almost all migrants had already left Ceuta and the situation was ‘almost completely normalized’.
