The disruption of the digital train radio system GSM-R halted regional and long-distance services as well as S-Bahn trains in several cities. Trains were held at stations, leaving passengers stranded. Deutsche Bahn issued taxi and hotel vouchers.
According to Deutsche Bahn, IT experts worked continuously to resolve the issue. During the night, the company gave the all-clear: trains gradually started moving again. However, isolated delays were still possible on Wednesday morning. Deutsche Bahn asked passengers to check their connections.
Philipp Nagl, head of the infrastructure company DB InfraGo, said the cause was a planned replacement of a technical component. The exact cause is being analyzed.
