US Donald Trump on Sunday called for restraint after fresh Israeli airstrikes on Beirut, the Guardian reports. “All sides should stand down,” Trump wrote on his social media platform. Mediators are currently trying to conclude negotiations on a preliminary peace deal between the US and Iran that would end the three-month war in the Middle East.

Trump played down the new Israeli strikes but stressed: “We are very close to an agreement that will bring peace to the region – including to Lebanon.” There must be no further Israeli attacks on Lebanon, but also no attacks by other parties, including Hezbollah, against Israel. “This could be the start of a long and beautiful peace – let’s not screw it up!” the US president said.

Trump had earlier suggested that the US could sign a deal with Iran as early as Sunday. But by evening in the Middle East, there were no signs of a breakthrough. Instead, Iranian representatives threatened a military response to the Israeli attack on Beirut, which destroyed a building in the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, killing three people and wounding six.

Israel said it had targeted senior Hezbollah commanders after the militant Islamist group, which has close ties to Iran, fired three projectiles into northern Israel. An Israeli strike on Beirut a week earlier had triggered a short but intense new round of fighting between Iran and Israel and temporarily destabilized negotiations between Tehran and Washington.

Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, Tehran’s chief negotiator and Iran’s parliament speaker, wrote on X on Sunday that the Israeli strikes on Beirut showed that “America either lacks the will or the ability to fulfill its commitments.” He warned that the attacks could jeopardize the final phase of talks.

EuroPulse reported on June 14, 2026, about Trump’s 80th birthday and growing concerns about his judgment (Trump turns 80: Age and judgment of US president cause concern).
