Washington has significantly intensified its strikes on Iran since the failure of a provisional ceasefire in the fighting over the Strait of Hormuz, attacking targets in the Islamic Republic for eleven consecutive days. Iran responded by shelling US military installations in the Gulf. The Jordanian army said it intercepted four Iranian missiles over Aqaba on Wednesday; two others landed in “uninhabited areas.” Jordan also said it intercepted four Iranian drones. Rocket alarms sounded again in Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia called on residents of the Gulf city of Dammam to take shelter.
Iran’s Health Ministry said US airstrikes over the past eleven days had killed 53 people, including six women and three children, and wounded nearly 600. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stressed that its retaliatory attacks would continue. Trump dismissed polls showing the Iran war is unpopular among US voters ahead of the November midterm elections. The war has already cost Washington $37.5 billion (€32.8 billion).
