The security of one of the world's most vital trade routes is hanging in the balance. U.S. President Donald Trump is ramping up pressure on NATO to participate in safeguarding the Strait of Hormuz—and threatening the alliance with consequences if it refuses.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump warned that NATO faces a 'very bad' future unless it helps the U.S. keep the crucial waterway open for global oil shipments. 'It's only appropriate that those who benefit from the strait contribute to ensuring nothing bad happens there,' the president said. He singled out China, urging it to get involved since the country sources 90% of its oil through the Strait of Hormuz.

Simultaneously, Trump discussed the strait's blockade with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with both leaders emphasizing the need to reopen it to end disruptions to global shipping. The German government has already ruled out any German participation in such measures.

This diplomatic push comes amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. A fire broke out near Dubai's international airport following a drone attack, igniting a fuel tank. Iran continues to reject talks with the U.S. about a potential end to the conflict.

At the same time, Trump is sharpening his rhetoric toward U.S. media, accusing outlets of coordinating with Iran to spread AI-generated fake images and false claims. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has increased pressure on some broadcasters, effectively threatening license revocations over their coverage of the Iran conflict.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and is a key transit route for oil tankers worldwide. Any blockade or instability in the region has immediate repercussions for energy supplies and the global economy. For Europe and Germany, the stability of this route holds significant strategic importance.

As Spain temporarily withdraws forces from Iraq and Britain considers possible contributions to securing the strait, the situation remains tense. Trump's demands leave NATO facing a difficult choice: deepen its involvement in the conflict or brace for diplomatic friction with Washington.
