US ‘more than capable’ of resuming war with Iran, Hegseth says

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the United States is 'more than capable' of resuming the war against Iran. His remarks at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore came hours after a meeting in Washington failed to produce a peace deal.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore that the United States is ‘more than capable’ of resuming the war against Iran. According to the Guardian, Hegseth said on Saturday ahead of the defense summit: ‘Our ability to restart if needed is more than sufficient.’ US weapons stockpiles are well-suited for both Iran and global operations, as the US maintains a balance between exquisite and abundant munitions.

Hegseth’s comments came after a meeting in Washington on Friday failed to achieve a breakthrough in peace negotiations with Iran. US Donald Trump had earlier said he could agree to a deal that includes far-reaching concessions from Tehran – including opening the Strait of Hormuz and abandoning Iran’s nuclear program. However, senior Iranian officials signaled that no agreement had been reached yet.

Iran, Hegseth also addressed China. He expressed ‘legitimate concern’ over Beijing’s military buildup but stressed that the US seeks a ‘respectful’ regional balance. The Pentagon chief’s speech contrasted with his sharply confrontational remarks about China at the same forum last year.

The Shangri-La Dialogue brings together senior defense officials and experts from around 45 countries each year. Hegseth’s appearance underscores the US military’s continued presence in the Indo-Pacific and its readiness to remain capable of action both in the Middle East and East Asia.
