According to T-online, the wind turbine in Bönen, west of Hamm, caught fire shortly after 12 p.m. Witnesses reported heavy smoke, and soon the nacelle was engulfed in flames. The black smoke plume was visible for miles.
The fire department set up a large safety perimeter as burning parts of the turbine kept falling to the ground. A direct firefighting attack was impossible – the source of the fire was at a height unreachable with available equipment. Residents were told to keep doors and windows closed.
The Hamm–Dortmund railway line has been closed since 12:46 p.m. According to ZuginfoNRW, delays and partial cancellations are expected. A replacement bus service between Dortmund and Hamm has been set up. Trains on lines RE 1, RE 6, and RE 11 are being rerouted, and the Kamen stop is canceled.
