The meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. local time in the Oval Office. Zelensky aims to discuss the urgent need for Patriot interceptor missiles and other systems to protect Ukrainian cities from Russian missile attacks. Benjamin Netanyahu is expected for a separate meeting with Trump at 11:00 a.m.
Zelensky announced his arrival in a Telegram post, writing that “talks with President Trump, his team, and those who can support our defense” are ahead. The discussions should focus on anti-ballistic capabilities and strategic cooperation between Ukraine and the United States.
During their last meeting in early July in Turkey, Trump praised Zelensky for his “excellent work” and signaled support for producing Patriot missiles in Ukraine. Kyiv urgently needs additional interceptor missiles and systems to defend its cities against ongoing Russian ballistic missile attacks.
In addition to the White House talks, Zelensky will attend a memorial service for the late Senator Lindsey Graham in Washington. Graham, a prominent supporter of Ukraine, was known for demanding tougher sanctions against Russia and continued US aid for Kyiv. “On behalf of all Ukraine, we will honor Lindsey Graham’s memory,” Zelensky wrote. Graham died unexpectedly on July 11, one day after his tenth trip to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
During his stay in Washington, Zelensky also wants to discuss urgent Patriot support and finalize a US-Ukrainian drone agreement. Ukraine hopes to expand military cooperation to repel Russian aggression.
