Zelenskyy gave the figure of 145,000 Russian soldiers killed since the start of the year in a recent statement, without providing further details on the sources of the estimate. The Ukrainian army regularly publishes estimates of Russian losses, which independent observers consider to be on the high side but plausible in magnitude.
The figure refers exclusively to fatalities, not to wounded or missing personnel. Russia itself has not released official casualty figures for months. The Ukrainian armed forces report updated total losses of Russian troops daily since the war began in February 2022.
