The actress Angelica Domröse has passed away at the age of 85, as confirmed by the DEFA Foundation to rbb on Friday.

Angelica Domröse was born in 1934 in Berlin and grew up in what was then East Germany. She began her career at the Berliner Ensemble, performing under the direction of Helene Weigel. Later, she moved to the Volksbühne and became one of the most recognized faces of East German cinema.

Domröse gained significant fame through her role in Heiner Carow’s film “The Legend of Paul and Paula” from 1973. In this DEFA film, she played the role of a single mother who rebels against societal norms. The film was praised for its realistic portrayal of everyday life in East Germany and its poetic dimension.

Throughout her career, Domröse appeared in over 50 films and was awarded the title of East German Television Artist of the Year three times. She was also politically active, signing a protest resolution in 1976 against the expatriation of Wolf Biermann, which led to restrictions in her professional career. In 1980, she emigrated to West Germany.

After her departure, she continued her career at the Schiller Theater in Berlin and appeared in numerous film and television productions, including Frank Beyer’s “The Second Skin” and the role of Commissioner Vera Bilewski in “Polizeiruf 110.” Her last film role was in 1991 in “Verfehlung.”

The news of her death has shocked many of her colleagues and fans. Politicians and associates expressed their condolences and honored her life’s work. In her memories, Domröse spoke openly about her challenges, including a long-standing alcohol addiction that she successfully overcame.
