Traditionally, museums were places where art and artifacts were displayed. However, this approach is fundamentally changing. As Deutsche Welle reports, International Museum Day highlights that museums today serve as unique spaces for community engagement and participation.

Museum expert Sandro Debono explains that the current definition of a museum, established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 2022, emphasizes inclusivity, diversity, and community involvement. This marks a significant shift, as the previous definition merely mentioned serving society without including its engagement.

Participatory practices in museums have gained importance, particularly in Latin America. Debono points to the development of citizen- and community-led museums dating back to the 1970s. These museums focus not only on objects but also on people, especially marginalized groups, supporting their empowerment and social transformation.

Similar approaches are increasingly being adopted in Europe and other parts of the world. Museums are beginning to focus on the needs of their visitors, offering interactive experiences that go beyond mere object displays.
