The Foundation Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation in Berlin is no longer to be affiliated with the German Historical Museum (DHM). A new foundation law being prepared by the Union faction plans to legally separate the institution. The culture minister, previously the central supervisory authority, no longer appears in the draft, as reported by FAZ.

Until now, the foundation was subordinate to the DHM, which limited its organizational and content-related independence. The new law is intended to give it its own legal form. It remains unclear what specific tasks the culture minister will still have regarding the foundation in the future.

The foundation commemorates the expulsion and flight history of around 14 million Germans after World War II. It opened in 2021 and has been politically controversial ever since. The planned reform could place the institution’s work on a new legal basis.
