The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), together with Bauwens and the Hopp Family Office, is building a new urban district on its former operational site in the Gallus district. The cornerstone for the Hellerhöfe was laid on Tuesday. A capsule contains a current edition of the FAZ, construction plans, and coins.
The first construction phase with 131 rental apartments and a 67-meter-high office tower in wood-hybrid construction is expected to be completed in just over two years. In total, more than 500 rental apartments for around 1,000 people are planned, along with office space, retail, restaurants, and two daycare centers. The city of Frankfurt itself is building an elementary school.
Planning chief Marcus Gwechenberger (SPD) emphasized at the groundbreaking that the project is not a given under the economically challenging conditions. Thirty percent of the apartments will be publicly subsidized. According to Gwechenberger, two-thirds of Frankfurt’s population are eligible for subsidized housing. “Affordable housing is important to attract skilled workers,” he said.
