Nearly two months after the parliamentary election in Denmark, another attempt to form a government has failed. Right-wing liberal Troels Lund Poulsen announced at a press conference that he would inform King Frederik X this evening that he cannot form a government. The right-wing liberals had negotiated, among others, with the Moderates of Lars Løkke Rasmussen, who position themselves between the right and left blocs.

Rasmussen now plans to again propose Social Democrat Mette Frederiksen to the king as the leader of government negotiations. He rejected a new election. The Social Democrats became the strongest force in the election at the end of March, but achieved a historically poor result. After weeks of talks, she also failed.

A key role falls to former Prime Minister Rasmussen, who with his party Moderaterne acts as a “kingmaker.” In Denmark, to form a government, it is enough not to have a majority against you. The so-called king’s round, in which the parties present their proposals to the monarch, has so far led to no agreement.
