Wrong-way driver on A8 near Grabenstätt: One dead, five injured

A serious accident involving a wrong-way driver occurred on the A8 near Grabenstätt on Saturday afternoon. The 89-year-old driver died, and five other people were injured, according to Bavarian Broadcasting (BR).

The accident happened around 2 p.m. on the A8 toward Munich between the Grabenstätt and Übersee junctions. Several drivers had previously called emergency services to report a wrong-way driver, according to the control center of the Upper Bavaria South Police Headquarters. Shortly afterward, a collision involving multiple vehicles occurred, including the wrong-way driver.

The 89-year-old wrong-way driver died at the scene. Five occupants of the other vehicles were injured, three of them seriously. According to police, the injured are not in life-threatening condition. The highway toward Munich is expected to remain closed for several hours for accident investigation.

An expert has been commissioned to prepare a technical and accident analysis report. Traffic is being rerouted on a large scale; a detour has been set up at the Siegsdorf West interchange.
