The operation followed a court order that invalidated the 2023 party congress and removed Özel. Ankara governor’s office had ordered the evacuation of the headquarters to enforce the ruling, which temporarily reinstates former CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu as chairman.
Özel announced he would not leave the building. Footage from broadcaster Halk TV showed police breaking through barricades. Thick smoke filled the building. The CHP leadership rejected allegations of bribery of delegates and filed an appeal with the Supreme Court.
The case was brought by a former party member. The CHP argues that the election board, not a court, should decide on the legality of party congress votes. Observers consider the decision unconstitutional and politically motivated, while the government stresses the independence of the judiciary.
The ruling is seen as a heavy blow to Erdogan’s political opponents. It could lead to the dismantling of the CHP, Turkey’s founding party. Protests have erupted in Ankara and other cities.
