Wynn-Williams, whose bestselling memoir “Careless People” recounts her years at Facebook, was announced as a panelist. Instead, she sat motionless while Cadwalladr and Wu discussed technology and power. Cadwalladr opened the panel by saying: “I think this is a first for Hay – an author in a hostage situation. Blink once if you can hear us, Sarah, twice if Mark Zuckerberg is an asshole.”
At the end of the event, Wynn-Williams received a standing ovation from the audience and was moved to tears. Cadwalladr commented: “I think we can say that Facebook is triggered.” The former Facebook executive has faced growing legal restrictions since the publication of “Careless People” last year. The book contains allegations about Meta’s internal culture and decision-making, including claims about political influence, the company’s China strategy, and concerns over the well-being of young users. Meta has disputed the book’s accounts.
