Berlin: Tram derails in Hohenschönhausen – 20 injured

A tram derailed and was torn open in Berlin on Tuesday morning. According to Bild, 20 people were injured, three of them seriously.

The accident occurred around 9:29 a.m. in Neu-Hohenschönhausen. According to the fire department, the tram was turning from Wartenberger Straße into Arnimstraße when part of the train suddenly derailed. A fire department spokesperson told Bild: “One part of the train hit a power pole and was torn open. Fortunately, none of the vehicle parts tipped over.”

A total of 20 passengers were injured, three of them seriously. Twelve people were taken to hospital. The fire department deployed 51 emergency personnel. Berlin’s public transport company (BVG) also sent an emergency manager to shut off the power.

Tram lines M5 and M17 are suspended between Gehrenseestraße and Falkenberg. Replacement bus services have been set up. The cause of the accident is still unclear.
