The Trump administration has brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. According to the Guardian, the truce is conditional on the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia ceasing all attacks and withdrawing its fighters from southern Lebanon. The announcement followed negotiations in Washington.

The US State Department released a joint statement calling the agreement a step toward overcoming one of the biggest obstacles to a broader deal with Iran. The ceasefire is initially set to last ten days, several news agencies report.

Hezbollah, designated a terrorist organization by the EU and the US, controls large parts of southern Lebanon. Israel had repeatedly struck militia targets in recent weeks. The new agreement stipulates that Lebanese forces will take control of the border region.
