The Israeli military attacked the southern suburbs of Beirut on Sunday. According to Israeli sources, the targets were “terrorist headquarters” of Hezbollah. Initial reports from the Lebanese state news agency said two people were killed and eleven others wounded. The strikes hit two apartments in two separate buildings.

This is the heaviest military blow against Hezbollah since a ceasefire came into effect in mid-April. The agreement had temporarily halted the fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed militia. The new attack threatens to shatter the fragile calm.

Former US Donald Trump said he would not demand that Lebanon be included in a future ceasefire agreement. The statement comes at a time when the United States is seeking a mediating role in the Middle East. Trump’s stance could weaken the position of the Lebanese government.

Hezbollah has not yet commented on the attacks. The Lebanese government condemned the airstrikes as a violation of sovereignty. International mediators, including the United States and France, are working to de-escalate the situation.
