Internationally renowned director Jafar Panahi is fighting a conviction in Tehran on charges of ‘propaganda against the system.’ As Spiegel reports, a court has now rejected his appeal. A notorious judge is showing no leniency, according to the report.

Panahi, a multiple award winner including the Palme d’Or in Cannes, has been in the crosshairs of the Iranian judiciary for years. In 2010, he was sentenced to six years in prison and a professional ban, but was later released on probation. The current case revolves around alleged regime-critical statements.
